First Nations, Métis, and Inuit (FNMI) Services, Alberta Education has recently published a promising practices resource for school jurisdictions to help enhance FNMI student success. This session will describe the School Community Learning Environment Project and highlight seven themes that emerged regarding promising practices to enhance FNMI student success. It will also include a small group activity.

Sandra Skare
After completing her masters of school psychology degree from UBC, Sandra returned to Alberta and is currently a Senior Education Manager with FNMI Services, Alberta Education. Her work involves assisting school jurisdictions to improve FNMI student success. Sandra is also an educator who has taught in First Nations schools for a number of years. She shares her perspectives and first-hand experiences to enhance the information she delivers.
The highlight of Sandra’s year has been managing the coordination of the “Promising Practices to Enhance High School Completion Among FNMI Students” conference that will take place this fall.
Dr. Abinash Mishra
As an educator, Dr. Mishra has over twenty-six years of experience in education and training of children, youths and adults. He has worked extensively in Northern Alberta and Saskatchewan and has been engaged in scholarly writings, publications and presentations in Cross-cultural/Inter-cultural education, Learning and Motivation, Positive Discipline, Special programs and Effective Teaching and Learning Practices in schools.
Dr. Mishra is a Senior Education Manager serving ten provincial school jurisdictions in Zone 4 Zone 2/3 as the liaising manager of the First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) Services Branch supporting the implementation of the First Nation, Métis and Inuit Education Policy Framework. Dr. Mishra also works with the Special Program Branch (Schools and Programs of Choice) providing help and support to First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) special needs students throughout the province. In addition, Dr. Mishra provides services to eleven First Nation schools and the Maskwachees Cultural College in Hobbema, Alberta, and liaise with the Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) to share information between the two Ministries to benefit all FNMI learners both in provincial as well as First Nations schools.
