e-Learning in the UK

The UK is proud to be at the forefront of developments in e-learning and be in a position to harness the potential of technology in its universities and colleges. This is in part due to the Government and funding agencies being pro-active and acknowledging that transformational change cannot be achieved by institutions alone and that coordinated activity is more likely to succeed. This presentation will highlight some of the initiatives that have been so successful and how they are helping practitioners engage with technology. There will be opportunities for sharing ideas/resources as well exploring collaboration with Canadian institutions.
 

We’ve been fortune in the UK to have a variety of agencies supporting e-learning developments, both pre- and post-compulsory education.  The presentation will explore what impact they have had over the past 10 years or more.

I will touch on the work of:

• The UK funding bodies
• The Higher Educating Academy
• The Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC)
• The Centre for Recording Achievement (CRA), in relation to e-portfolios
• Centres for Excellence in Teaching & Learning (CETLs) a £350m+ initiative which includes the Blended Learning CETL (with which there will be a link for part of the conference) and the Reusable Learning Object (RLO) CETL

Many of the outputs of projects and grant supported activities are freely available not only in the UK but further a field. I will be able to highlight many of these but also look to explore how we can establish meaningful relationships between Canada and the UK.

Discussion will focus around the way outputs from UK based work are being use and how we might see greater collaboration in the future.
